1 killed in shooting at Fashion Island retail center in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH – A person was killed Tuesday during an apparent robbery and shooting at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.

Initial reports from police indicated a mid-afternoon robbery at the shopping mall led to one of the suspects opening fire, an official said.

There was no immediate description of a suspect or whether more than one person was shot.

News video from the scene showed a police had placed a tent over a victim on a street at the center.

The shooting startled staff and shoppers at Fashion Island, described by its owner, the Irvine Company, as “an unrivaled setting for ultra-premium shopping, dining and lifestyle brands.”
