An estimated half of employed American consumers have a side job or another form of supplemental income, according to a 2023 survey by LendingClub.

Amongst the report’s noteworthy findings, it revealed that while the more financially affluent consumers opted in for side jobs due to the relatively easy nature of the work and because they enjoyed doing it (70% and 56% respectively), for those living paycheck to paycheck who were struggling on low-income, their core motivation was to have enough in the bank to pay their bills.

Today, the picture for side jobs is no different.

The number of working Americans who hold second jobs has reached its peak, soaring above pre-pandemic levels to a yearly average unmatched since 2010. “In July, there were 8.402 million people working multiple jobs in the U.S,” says Advisor Perspectives of their BLS data analysis on professionals holding side jobs.
