11 children clear Christmas wishlists thanks to Wiggins Shop with a Cop

WIGGINS, Miss. (WLOX) – Santa Claus gets help from many during the holidays. The elves and the reindeer are a few, but he has many helpers outside of the North Pole, as well.

While Christmas is a breeze for ol’ St. Nick, Deputy Chief Tim Hill with the Wiggins Police Department understands that some families need a helping hand during the holidays.

“When you see them shopping, it just brings happiness to them,” said Deputy Chief Hill. “It is one of those things I look forward to once a year.”

That’s why each year, the department picks a few kids for their Shop with a Cop event, letting them indulge in a $200 shopping spree across the local Walmart.

“I couldn’t be more proud and the people at the store couldn’t be more proud of this event,” said Eddie Gore, the Store Manager at Wiggins Walmart.

Officers and parents guide the children through the store as they cross through their Christmas list.

For parents like Lela Powell, this lifts a weight off her shoulders.

“This is such a blessing for me and my family,” said Powell. “I have six children in total, so to have help with one is a big help. I really appreciate it.”

As families made their way through the checkout line, officers were left with a smile, knowing 11 more kids wouldn’t go without this holiday season.
