12 Podiatrist-approved Winter Boots for Warm, Comfy, and Ache-free Feet — From $60
Few packing errors will ruin your trip faster than toughing out your cold-weather destination in the wrong boots. Of course, you want to look stylish and pulled together, no matter the conditions. However, warmth, comfort, and support are key to selecting the right pair, according to Suzanne C. Fuchs, a board-certified podiatrist at LuxePodiatry in Florida.
“A boot with good arch support and cushioning can help alleviate foot fatigue and prevent discomfort,” she told Travel + Leisure. “Avoid boots that are too tight or have inadequate insulation, as these can lead to cold feet and reduced circulation.”
And of course, you’ll need to look for waterproof or water-resistant boots to keep your feet dry in snow or slush. “Ensure the boot has a sturdy, non-slip sole to provide traction on icy surfaces,” Fuchs added, recommending styles with “good insulation” made with Thinsulate or shearling to “keep your feet warm in cold temperatures.”
Not sure where to start? According to Fuchs, Merrell, Sorel, and Columbia are brands “known for producing high-quality winter boots that offer a combination of warmth, comfort, and durability.” The trio also “consistently deliver reliable performance and comfort, making them suitable choices for winter footwear.” Ahead, check out some of the most comfortable boots for winter travel, including the doctor’s favorite brands and other great picks — with many on sale, and most under $100.
Columbia Ice Maiden Shorty Snow Boots
“Columbia provides a range of options with advanced traction technology, which is great for navigating slippery conditions,” Fuchs shared. This affordable option is waterproof and breathable, keeping the elements out so feet stay warm and dry. The mid-height style is versatile and eminently wearable for a wide range of travel purposes. It’s insulated with solid ankle support and a soft faux fur collar — all for around the cost of checking a single travel bag.
Columbia Moritza Hiking Shoes
Another comfy style from the Fuchs-approved brand Columbia is this cool hiking shoe, available in four colorways including a wintery-chic white on white. It’s got great cushioning and traction for terrain with gravel, rocks, or dirt, and with a more streamlined look than other hiking footwear.
Merrell Cold Pack 3 Waterproof Snow Boots
“Merrell boots often feature excellent arch support and cushioning, making them ideal for long periods of wear,” Fuchs explained — and this waterproof snow boot is a great example of that support, with the brand’s proprietary Air Cushion technology in the heel to absorb shock and add stability. In full-grain leather and mesh upper, these boots are warm but ultrathin and flexible, with a waterproof membrane that keeps water out and lets moisture out.
Bearpaw Kendall Boots
Available in three colors and priced under $100, these tall boots provide full insulation against the cold with a wool-blend lining that keeps your feet and legs warm. A removable sheepskin footbed adds extra softness and cushioning. “I absolutely love these boots,” wrote one five-star reviewer. “They are waterproof and keep my feet so warm in rain and snow.”
Aerosoles Faux-shearling Trimmed Knee-high Boots
For city sightseeing from day to night, this versatile and comfortable boot is an absolute steal right now at up to 42 percent off. A wedge heel takes the pressure off the balls of the feet — and is stylish and versatile. The stretchy calf fits the leg, and black faux suede can be dressed up or down easily.
Vionic Fallbrook Water-resistant Knee-high Boots
From Oprah-loved brand Vionic, which is recommended by the American Podiatric Medical Association, this leather boot is a packing powerhouse for cold climates. A lightweight insole adds extra support and the boot is overall water resistant. These are wide-calf friendly, with sizes available in medium or wide. And they’re currently marked down a generous 50 percent.
Sorel Joan Now Chelsea Boots
“Sorel boots are well-regarded for their insulation and waterproof materials, which are essential for keeping feet warm and dry,” Fuchs said brand, which also has a stamp of approval from Oprah. With a statement-making cool rubber lug sole, this chunky boot is suitably stylish for all those winter trips. These are available in full-grain leather or suede and five colorways.
Columbia Minx IV Snow Boots
Marked down 25 percent, the Columbia Minx IV Snow Boots are currently at the lowest price we’ve seen in 30 days. Available in five colorways and both regular and wide options, these boots from one of Fuchs’ top three recommended brands offer excellent traction and insulation for serious warmth and coziness. “You will have happy feet in these boots,” according to one of the reviewers, who contributed to the style’s nearly perfect 4.8-star rating on Amazon.
Skechers Slip-in Cozy Weather 2 Boots
When your hands are full — as they often are during winter travels, especially when there are kids, luggage, or holiday presents involved — there’s nothing like a hands-free boot solution to win the moment. These vegan slip-on booties are oh-so-comfy with a pillowy footbed, memory foam insole, and a festive sweater knit fold-over collar. The micro-leather upper is treated with Scotchguard for endurance through the elements — and whatever your travels have in store.
Xero Shoes Ridgeway Chelsea Boots
Chelsea boots are incredibly versatile for travel, and this pair has a flexible design that lets your feet flex and bend naturally for extra comfort and a full range of movement. Full-grain leather uppers take the shape of your feet over time (and take on a cool-looking patina as you wear them). Elastic gores let you slip in and out easily, but these boots still fit securely. Insoles are removable so you can decide (and change) how much of a barefoot feel you want. What’s more, they’re super lightweight weighing less than 1.5 pounds per pair, making them ideal for packing.
The North Face ThermoBall Waterproof Boots
The ultimate in cozy warmth, these secure-fitting winter boots have durable recycled ripstop uppers and serious insulation so your feet stay dry and cozy. The lace-up design allows you to customize the sizing for a bespoke fit. “The waterproof feature of these boots is a game changer,” according to one REI shopper. “I never worry about my feet getting wet or cold while walking through snow or slush.”
Columbia Minx Shorty Boots
From one of Fuchs’ top-recommended brands, these waterproof and breathable boots keep feet cozy and dry for all kinds of winter travel adventures. The thermal reflective lining provides serious warmth, and the faux fur collar and tongue lining keep feet super comfy.
