120Hz Refresh Rate Is Finally Coming To The Standard iPhone 17 As Apple Plans To Port ProMotion From The ‘Pro’ Models With The Price Hike Still Uncertain
Apple could be planning to narrow the gap between its iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro lineup next year as far as the display specifications are concerned. The standard iPhone models have always featured an inferior display compared to the ‘Pro’ models, and based on recent rumors, the iPhone 17 could get a higher refresh rate display. However, it remains to be seen if the company is planning to bring a 120Hz or a 90Hz refresh rate.
Apple is planning to bring the iPhone 17 Pro’s most awaited feature to the standard iPhone 17 lineup
The iPhone 16 models were greatly redesigned this year, and the devices brought a vertical camera module to the lineup. The display, on the other hand, remained ignored with a 60Hz refresh rate. According to a Weibo-based leaker named Digital Chat Station, the standard iPhone 17 model could feature an upgraded display and Apple’s ‘ProMotion’ technology. This is the first time Apple will be bumping up the refresh rate of the base models, and it will surely be a noteworthy addition.
The leaker did not mention if the devices will feature a 90Hz or a 120Hz refresh rate, but if past reports are anything to go by, Apple could see fit to bring 120Hz panels to the standard iPhone 17 lineup. ProMotion technology was limited to the ‘Pro’ models of the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. It appears that the company might be internally switching to 120Hz panels for its entire product line, but there has been no confirmation regarding it.
The company is expected to use LTPO or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide panels for the entire iPhone 17 lineup, which will allow for a higher 120Hz ProMotion capability. Other than this, the panels are also more power efficient, which could allow the devices to consume less battery life. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus feature LTPS or low-temperature polycrystalline silicon panels, which limits the display refresh rate to just 60Hz.
With the higher refresh rate, users can also expect the standard iPhone 17 models to feature the Always-On functionality. This is because the LTPO displays allows for variable refresh rate, which can switch from as high as 120Hz to as low as 1Hz, based on the content being viewed on the iPhone. This will also be the first time for the standard models to get the Always-On display on the device, making room for features like StandBy and much more.
This is not the first time that we have heard details on the iPhone 17 switching to 120Hz panels, as prominent display analyst Ross Young previously corroborated that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will get ProMotion functionality. It remains to be seen if the company is planning to increase the price of the standard models of the iPhone, as the devices would bridge the feature-based segregation the company has created over the years. Do you think Apple will increase the refresh rate of the iPhone 17 Pro models to 144Hz?
