13 FIRST ALERT: Messy start to the weekend with tricky travel likely

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – It’s a good day to have the 13 First Alert weather app on hand as a storm system tracks south of the state, bringing a variety of wintry precipitation to Western Wisconsin with slick travel expected as a result. Temperatures warmed into the low 20s overnight and will continue climbing to around freezing today. Periods of snow and freezing rain are likely, though potential dry air entraining into the system may delay the onset of precipitation or keep various spots dry. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of Western Wisconsin through this evening. In addition to the messy weather, winds are expected to pick up from the east-southeast.

Chances for a wintry mix will stick around into early tonight as low pressure weakens to the south. When all is said and done, snow accumulations between a dusting and two inches will be possible. A glaze of ice is also possible with any freezing rain or drizzle that falls, but a tenth of an inch or more of ice can’t be ruled out along and south of I-90. Be sure to use extreme caution and take it slow on area roadways if you encounter slick conditions!
