IOC Refugee scholar Nancy Moreira secured a unanimous decision win over Mexico’s Gricelda Duran in the 2024 Boxing 2nd World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand on Wednesday (29 May).

The Cape Verdian, who only started boxing at 23 and won gold at the 2023 African Boxing Championships, showed superior ring craft in the women’s 66kg bout.

Moreira told Olympics.com last year how the sport has changed her life, and ‘isn’t imitating anyone’ in her pursuit of competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024*.

Top Irish boxing prospect Martin McDonagh took a powerful step towards realising his own Olympic ambitions.

Boxing in his first bout at the Indoor Stadium Huamark, the super heavyweight delivered a first-round stoppage win over Vietnam’s Doan Ngoc Nieu, who received three standing counts.

McDonagh is being touted back home as a potential Olympic medallist at Los Angeles 2028, but he believes that he can get to the Games sooner.

Elsewhere, European champion and world bronze medallist Ayoub El Aissaoui also progressed with a unanimous decision win over Canada’s Doni Foreman in the men’s +92 division.

More to follow.

*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective teams at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at Paris 2024 depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation.
