2024 Olympic schedule for July 31: USA-South Sudan basketball rematch, USWNT and a big night in the pool

Medal table | Olympic schedule | Olympic news

Day 5 in Paris loaded with compelling competition.

Wednesday’s action at the Paris Olympics showcases an unexpectedly anticipated USA basketball rematch, a big day in the pool featuring Léon Marchand and Katie Ledecky and a resurgent U.S. women’s national soccer team closing out group play.

In gymnastics, two U.S. men fresh off securing team bronze will look to crash a podium party that’s expected to feature dominant Japanese and Chinese gymnasts.

Here are five of the events we’re most anticipating:

In an Olympic warmup on July 20, South Sudan threatened what would have been one of the biggest upsets in basketball history — even if it was an exhibition. The relatively fledgling program representing a nation that was founded in 2011 led a team featuring several future Hall of Famers by 16 points and carried a 100-99 advantage into the final 20 seconds.

Only a late LeBron James layup prevented Team USA from losing to the 43.5-point underdog. Eleven days later on Wednesday, USA and South Sudan will meet again. This time, the game counts.

USA dominated a Serbia team featuring Nikola Jokić in its group play opener. South Sudan beat Puerto Rico, 90-79 for its first-ever Olympic victory. Will USA be better prepared this time around?

After a disappointing bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. women are off to a strong start in Paris. The USWNT cruised to a 3-0 win over Zambia in its Olympic opener. It followed up with a 4-1 win over Germany to take commanding control of Group B and clinch a spot in the knockout round with one game remaining in group play.

That game is against Australia on Wednesday. First place in group B and better quarterfinal seeding is still technically at stake. But USA would have to lose the game and a six-goal differential advantage over second-place Germany. Australia’s in third place behind Germany on the outside looking in at a guaranteed spot in the knockout round. Don’t expect USA to let off the gas with a group play sweep in its sights.

Medals will be awarded in five events in the pool on Wednesday: the men’s 200-meter butterfly final, women’s 1,500-meter freestyle final, men’s 200-meter breaststroke final and two of the most anticipated swims of this or any Games — the men’s and women’s 100-meter freestyle finals.

Seven-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky and French phenom Léon Marchand are among the swimming stars going for hardware. After securing bronze in the 400-meter freestyle, Ledecky is the overwhelming favorite to secure gold in a 1,500-meter event that’s her signature.

After living up to his considerable hype to secure 400-meter individual medley gold, Marchand has a chance to add two more gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter breaststroke.

Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan is the favorite in 100-meter women’s freestyle final that features Americans Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske. The 100-meter men’s freestyle final caps the night and is up for grabs. Americans Chris Guiliano and Jack Alexy hope to contend.

After securing team bronze, two U.S. men face will look to secure a podium upset in an individual all-around final that heavily favors Japanese and Chinese contenders.

Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto is the defending all-around champion from the Tokyo Games. His teammate Shinnosuke Oka also projects to contend for gold as well as China’s Zhang Boheng and Tokyo silver medalist Xiao Ruoteng.

USA’s Frederick Richard won bronze at the 2023 World Championship and is the team’s top contender. Paul Juda will also compete for USA.

The women are down to the quarterfinals and start whittling away to the final four on Tuesday. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek takes on Danielle Collins, the last American remaining in the women’s singles field. They’re third up on Suzanne-Lenglen Court on a day that starts with three matches scheduled for 6 a.m. ET.

Men’s No. 1 Novak Djokovic will be in action against Dominik Koepfer in the third round at 6 a.m. after he dispatched of rival Roland Garros favorite Rafael Nadal in the second round.

American Coco Gauff returns to the court in doubles after losing an emotional third-round match in singles on Tuesday. She scheduled for two matches on Wednesday with doubles partner Jessica Pegula against Czechs Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova and with mixed doubles partner Taylor Fritz against Canadians Gabriela Dabrowski and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Both matches will take place later in the day.
