2027 BMW X5 & iX5 Ditch Massive Grilles For Neue Klasse Design | Carscoops
The next generation SUV looks like a larger version of the upcoming BMW iX3, with the signature greenhouse and proportions of the current X5
- BMW is developing the fifth-generation X5 alongside the new fully-electric iX5.
- The new models adopt styling cues from the Vision Neue Klasse X concept.
- Both versions of the luxury SUV are expected to launch in 2026.
BMW might be close to unveiling the production versions of the 3-Series and X3 Vision Neue Klasse concepts, but other new models are also on the horizon. Our spy photographers caught prototypes of what appears to be the next generation of the X5 and iX5 SUVs, wrapped in heavy camouflage.
The prototypes look larger than those of the next-gen BMW iX3 while adopting similar styling cues. The proportions and the greenhouse are reminiscent of the previous generations of the X5, showing that BMW designers might want to keep a level of continuity.

Despite the heavy camouflage strategically layered under black wrap, some details peek through. The front end hints at a much smaller kidney grille and sharper headlights, echoing the design language of the BMW Neue Klasse X concept. Other intriguing features include flush door handles and a rear spoiler reminiscent of the XM.
Our spy photographers captured two variations of the X5/iX5 undergoing testing. The first, boasting larger brake rotors and fiery red calipers, hints at a potential performance variant. Meanwhile, the second prototype rolls on imposing 22-inch wheels, suggesting a focus on either luxury or off-road capability.
BMW is expected to offer the new X5 with ICE and hybrid powertrains, alongside a fully electric iX5. Additionally, a hydrogen-powered version is anticipated, following the pilot program of the current BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which uses FCEV technology from Toyota.
As with the new 5-Series and i5, the ICE and EV versions of the mid-size luxury SUV will ride on the same platform. Judging from the blocked grilles, charging ports on the front fenders, and the lack of visible tailpipes, the pictured prototypes are likely EVs.
There’s no official word yet on the fifth-generation BMW X5/iX5 launch, but rumors point to a summer 2026 debut as 2027 models. This aligns with the Bavarian automaker’s plan to refresh most of its lineup in the coming years, unifying design and technology across the range.
