CHICAGO (WIFR) – The American Automobile Association (AAA) expects 4th of July travel to set a new record in Illinois and nationwide.

According to AAA, more than 70.9 million people in the U.S. are expected to travel 50 miles or more between June 29 and July 7, compared to 67.4 million in 2023. In Illinois, 4.1 million people are expected to travel this year.

Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA says, “The summer travel season is off to a hot start and we expect to set new travel records on the road and in the sky during the week of Independence Day. That means even more people at airports and popular attractions like beaches, lakes and theme parks.”

Since Memorial Day, average gas prices in Illinois have been as high as $4.05 and as low as $3.75, and AAA predicts prices will fluctuate through the rest of the summer. The AAA projects a record 60.6 million people in the U.S. will travel by car over the 4th of July week, which is 2.8 million more travelers compared to last year.

“Road travelers should prepare for congestion in the afternoon and evening hours, particularly near larger metro areas, theme parks and popular attractions. With so many people on the road it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving, and move over for people on the roadside,” says Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA.
