5 fashion trends from the Golden Globes

The 82nd Golden Globes took place on Sunday, marking 2025’s first major awards event. The show is famously one of its most relaxed, thanks to an open bar, and celebrities dressed for the party as much as they did the red carpet.

Many of last night’s outfits stuck to the old-school Hollywood glamour formula seen at last year’s show, with velvet and sequins coming on strong. However, this year saw more playful takes on classic silhouettes. Some of the biggest stars borrowed looks straight from recent runway collections, while others dug into fashion’s archives and some took sartorial chances by adding unusual personal touches to their ensembles.

Here are some of the biggest trends to keep track of as this year’s party and awards season unfolds.

Gilded age

One of the night’s biggest trends was metallics.

Actors Mindy Kaling, Mikey Madison and Eiza González wore gold sequined column gowns from Ashi Studio, Bottega Veneta and Gucci, respectively. Other actors who sported shiny clothes included Felicity Jones, who wore a silver beaded Prada gown; Angelina Jolie, who wore a sheer long-sleeved Alexander McQueen gown dripping with silver and crystal chains; and Demi Moore wore a strapless custom Giorgio Armani Privé pewter champagne gown with a curving Swarovski crystal detail.

Monochromatic moments

Stars went all-in on color, with many actors wearing a single shade from head to toe.

Blue was big, with Kate Hudson in a navy strapless beaded gown by Carolina Herrera and Abby Elliott in a navy gown by Monique Lhuillier. Jean Smart donned a baby blue Rhea Costa gown and Selena Gomez wore a baby blue off-the-shoulder Prada column gown with a train. Andrew Scott went with what he called “Smurf blue” in a Vivienne Westwood ensemble.

All-black was also popular. Glen Powell wore an all-black custom Giorgio Armani look and Richard Gadd wore an all-black Dior Men tuxedo.

Others chose red, which was arguably one of the most popular shades of evening. Morris Chestnut wore a crimson suit by Gray, Emma Stone wore a strapless cherry custom Louis Vuitton column gown, and Dakota Fanning wore a sweeping lipstick red Dolce & Gabbana gown with an attached scarf.

Material girls

Extra fabric, including trains, capes, overskirts and winged sleeves, lent sweeping drama to otherwise slim silhouettes.

Actor Viola Davis wore an upcycled Gucci gown in black with an attached rainbow sequined cape, while actor Zendaya wore an orange bronze custom sleeveless satin overskirt gown from Louis Vuitton. She is currently a brand ambassador for the house.

Meanwhile, exaggerated proportions showed up on actors including Cynthia Erivo, who wore a custom Louis Vuitton gown with an ultra wide hip detail. Elle Fanning wore a Balmain ball gown with a massive, sweeping skirt and a leopard printed bust detail.

Ruffles and floof were also popular, as seen on actor Sarah Paulson, who wore a feathered Elie Saab gown, and comedian Ali Wong wore a shredded red strapless Balenciaga Haute Couture column gown. Actor Melissa McCarthy channeled Barbie in Christian Siriano, with a hot pink ruffled jumpsuit and gigantic ruffled pink cloak.

Shoulder season

Shoulders were having a big moment, albeit in a subtle way.

Structured, padded looks showed up in outfits from actor Keri Russell’s all-white, belted suit dress by Stéphane Rolland to the beaded top of actor Cate Blanchett’s gold draped Louis Vuitton gown.

One-shouldered gowns were also popular with actors, as seen on Nicole Kidman, who wore the look on a silver backless Balenciaga column dress and Karla Sofía Gascón, who wore an orange one-shouldered Saint Laurent gown with a train.

Strapless was another well-represented look among actors, as seen on Kristen Bell, who wore an Ashi Studio cream metallic peplum gown; Zoë Kravitz, who appeared in a velvet Saint Laurent column gown with a white satin train; and Anna Sawai, who wore a white peplum Dior gown.

All in the details

In keeping with the evening’s relatively relaxed vibe, many actors punched up classic silhouettes with unexpected elements.

Brooches added interest on suit lapels. Adrien Brody’s massive Elsa Jin pin enhanced his otherwise simple three-piece Thom Browne suit, while Jeff Goldblum went all in on baubles with multiple glittering brooches on both lapels of his baby blue beaded Amiri jacket. Meanwhile, some men showed off necklaces instead of ties, including Tyler James Williams, who was shirtless in a Dolce & Gabbana suit and wore Anita Ko jewelry.

Coleman Domingo also decided to forego a tie, and instead chose a large bowed scarf to complement his Valentino ensemble, and Jeremy Strong wore a turtleneck when he traded his usual brown red carpet attire for a mint green velvet Loro Piana suit and matching bucket hat.

Finally, opera gloves were the top accessory of the night, as seen on musician and actor Ariana Grande, who wore a yellow vintage Givenchy couture gown and white gloves; actor Pamela Anderson, who wore a black Oscar de la Renta gown and black gloves; and actor Kerry Washington, who wore a hot pink one-shouldered Balenciaga gown and black gloves.
