605 Day Celebrates South Dakota Travel

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Wednesday was 605 Day in South Dakota. The significance of 605 Day is explained by the Aberdeen Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Event and Marketing Coordinator Katherine Grandstrand-Quail.

“We celebrate 605 Day on June 5th, 6-oh-5, and Forever 605 is a pledge that they started last year. It’s just basically about being a good steward, being a good traveler,” said Grandstrand-Quail.

In addition to being a responsible South Dakota traveler, there’s another part of the pledge.

“Part of the Forever 605 pledge is shopping local. Maybe checking out, you know, if you’re going to go get a coffee in the morning when you’re traveling, maybe check out a local coffee shop. Don’t go to the chain where you can get the same thing everywhere. Try something new, try something fun, try something local, ” said Grandstrand-Quail.

Speaking on the topic of fun and local, Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Superintendent Travis Lemer said a great place to support local is at Storybook Land in Aberdeen and the Family Fun Weekend starting Friday.

“That park is pretty special and we’re really excited to be able to show that off this weekend for sure. Being able to partner with the Princesses and Superhero parties, just kind of icing on the cake, right? Just to get some other interaction out there and seeing the kids running around having a great time,” said Lemer.

Featured items for the weekend will be a “one ticket fits all” day, a fishing tournament, and a brand new barn ride at Storybook Land debuting this year.
