700 volunteers travel to Capitol to lobby for Medicare Multi-Cancer Detection Screening Coverage Act
(WBNG) — 700 American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network volunteers traveled to Capital Hill on Tuesday to speak to the Senate about the Medicare Multi-Cancer Detection Screening Coverage Act.
30 of those volunteers are from New York State. They will meet with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to lobby in support of the act.
Their goal is to share the issues that are most important to the cancer community now.
The act would make cancer screening less invasive and check for multiple types of cancer. The volunteers are asking Congress to pre-approve Medicare to cover these tests.
Vice Chair of the American Cancer Society CAP John Manna said this will help decrease the number of cancer deaths and said it’s also fiscally sound.
”It’s a great way to determine if people have multiple types of cancer with just one fairly inexpensive test,” Manna said. “However, like any other test, if a person can’t afford to get it, it doesn’t do him or her any good.”
Manna explained that this act is popular at the Capitol right now, with more than two-thirds of Congress signed on.
