LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A 73-year-old woman in Mount Washington is being recognized for her inspiring impact on the community.

Caryn Coakley has been going to Club Fitness on Bardstown Road since 2017. The gym offers an array of classes, including free options for seniors.

Silver Sneakers is a program that partners with insurance companies and gyms to help older generations be more active and, in return, they get a free gym membership.

Because of her commitment, she’s been nominated to be the Silver Sneakers Member of the Year. Coakley used to work a desk job before she retired and she says she never exercised before. In the past two years, she’s lost 20 pounds.

Now, she goes to the gym pretty much every day not only for classes, but to help set up and support others in their fitness journey.

“When I first started working out, it was the hardest thing for me to get into a routine of coming here every, twice a week,” Coakley said. “Everybody in here has just been as friendly as can be. We greet each other. We hug each other. It’s like having a classroom full of girlfriends.”

You can vote for Coakley on the Silver Sneakers website. The deadline to vote is Friday, June 28.
