9-year-old QCA native prepares for World BMX Championships

EAST MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) – At just nine years old, Broder Petersen has already become a well-known BMX rider in the QCA over the past five years.

“I’m just trying to focus and if whatever happens I just try to think fast and do all the moves I can, Petersen said. “If you are thinking to be a BMX rider, train every day and don’t give up.”

Petersen practices and races multiple times each week, and has become a dominant force on the local circuit.

“I was all about it. I was super impressed how early he was able to ride a bike and it just seemed like a talent he had that maybe he could excel at,” said Brian Petersen, Broder’s father.

On the track, Broder Petersen is known by a different name, Cash Money.

“Broder’s middle name is Cash and everybody at the track has to pick a nickname for them,” Brian Petersen said. “Cash came from Johnny Cash, but ‘Cash Money’ came from other people calling him that at church and so he decided that was going to be his BMX nickname.”

Now, Cash Money has his eyes set on a bigger stage. He qualified for the BMX World Championships down in South Carolina, and he’s very excited.

“Out of 10, I gotta be an 11 out of 10,” Cash Money said.

“I probably get nervous every time[he is on the track,]” Brian Petersen said. “So many things can happen out on the track from something you do or something that happens on the different conditions on the track. For the most part, we’ve been pretty lucky.”

Despite the high stakes, Cash Money remembers why he first got into BMX racing.

“Just meeting friends, riding the track, doing jumps, manuals and all the fun stuff,” Cash Money said.

Cash Money said his first race at the world championships is on Monday, May 13.
