Sports Spotlight: After shining at Rose and future near at ECU, Mosley qualifies for US Junior Amateur Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – J.H. Rose grad Luke Mosley has earned state and regional titles in high school. But he could earn his biggest achievement yet next month against the best of the best in junior golf.

We feature him in our Pepsi Sports Spotlight.

“Played a lot with my dad growing up. Just kind of taking me out for nine holes,” says incoming ECU golfer Luke Mosley.

What started as fun with Dad quickly turned into a passion for Greenville’s Luke Mosley.

“Practicing every day and playing in tournaments,” says Luke.

Luke was part of the first-ever state men’s golf championship at J.H. Rose. He was the medalist of the state tournament in 2022.

“It’s a different level of pressure at times,” says Mosley, “So you kind of have to learn how to deal with the pressure.”

He also has won multiple regional team titles and was Medalist there too.

“Play the game when it means the most,” says Luke.

The Rampants were state runner-up this spring in 3A.

“We never lost a conference golf match the whole time I was there,” says Luke.

After wrapping up his high school career though, it’s his fellow Rampants that made it special.

“Being with all the guys playing and practicing it was just an awesome experience,” Mosley says.

Luke signed to play for East Carolina University men’s golf in college earlier this school year.

“Staying at home and fulfilling a dream to play for ECU,” says Luke, “It fit me the best.”

Mosley has already made a big climb up the college cart path this summer. He is one of 256 qualifiers for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship next month in Michigan.

“Tried to qualify for it the last four years,” says Luke, “I felt like I was kind of due to qualify.”

It’s a 36-hole tournament and the top 64 golfers advance to match play. Then they go head to head to claim the championship at the two course Oakland Hills Country Club.

“I love match play,” says Mosley, “You can be more aggressive. You can be more competitive with the person you are playing with.”

Some guys you might have heard of have won the tournament before Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, and Will Zalatoris. A big deal for a kid from Greenville to play in it.

“Hitting my driver pretty good and rolling a couple putts in,” says Luke, “So I think I will be pretty ready.”

The winner earns an exemption to the next two U.S. Amateur Championships and a spot at the 2025 U.S. Open.

“That would be pretty hard to do but you never know,” says Mosley.

The U.S. Junior Amateur Championship is July 22nd to 27th.

Luke is also playing in the North Carolina Junior Boys Championship this week at Rolling Hills Country Club in Monroe.
