Houston airports see second busiest travel day during summer kickoff

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Houston airports had a busy day on June 6, with loads of people flying through. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 83,796 passengers went through the checkpoints at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) on that day.

Why the big rush? Well, it turns out that nearly 190,000 kids in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) finished school the day before, starting their summer break. Families wasted no time hitting the skies for vacations and fun, which explains the spike in travel.

TSA counts how many people pass through security at airports. Even though June 6 wasn’t quite the busiest day ever (that was March 8, with 84,295 passengers), it still shows how busy travel season can get during school breaks and holidays.

Houston airports handle around 19 million travelers between Memorial Day (May 27) and Labor Day (September 9). Bush Airport is expecting over 14.6 million travelers, and Hobby Airport is looking at over 4.3 million, mostly on domestic flights.

To make sure your travel goes smoothly with all these people flying around, here are three easy tips from Houston Airports:

  1. Book Your Parking in Advance: Don’t stress about parking; reserve your spot online at least 12 hours before you get there at fly2houston.com/parking.
  2. Get the Houston Airports App: Stay in the loop and find your way around by downloading the free Houston Airports app. It tells you how long the security lines are so you can plan ahead.
  3. Speed Up Security with TSA Pre-Check: Skip the long lines by signing up for TSA Pre-Check. You can apply online, and if you’re approved, you get to keep your shoes and belt on during security, making things much faster.

With Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays being the busiest travel days this summer, Houston Airports is all about making sure your vacation starts off stress-free.
