Sports Spotlight: West Monona’s Kacy Miller makes impact on Spartans athletic program as five-sport standout

ONAWA, Iowa (KCAU) – Whether it’s softball, wrestling, track and field, basketball, or volleyball, West Monona’s Kacy Miller has made her impact within the Spartans athletic program for the past few years.

“A lot of hard work and dedication at all times and when there’s a break, you go find something to make you better at.” Miller said.

Miller has saved her best performances for her senior season.

After helping guide the Spartans volleyball team to its most wins in a single season since 2020, the five-sport standout continued her success on the wrestling mats. Miller took an unblemished 23-0 record into the IGHSAU postseason, going undefeated in the Region 2 Qualifier in the 105 pound weight class. Miller earned the #2 seed at the State Tournament, wrestling to the state championship, falling to top-seeded Layla Philips of Mason City via 9-4 decision. Her runner-up finish gave Miller back-to-back podium placements after finishing in fifth in 2023.

On the hardwood, she averaged 18.6 points per game along with 5.6 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game, all top ten marks in the Western Valley Conference. The guard helped guide the Spartans to the Class 2A Region 3 semifinals, ending its season to state semifinalist Westwood.

Most recently in track and field, the West Monona senior was a part of three top-five finishes at State this season. Playing multiple sports has provided Miller with plenty of work and challenges, but it’s from that work that stems her skills.

“I think playing all different sports makes you a better athlete throughout all the sports that you play.” Miller mentioned.

Plenty of big moments for Miller, but she and the West Monona softball team are still searching for more in her last go-around with the Spartans.

“We show up each day and come play the sport that we all love and we all have one common goal of winning it and come together and play as a team and it’s been a fun ride and hope to keep it going.” Miller added.

Now in the midst of her final softball season, Miller and the Spartans have picked up right where they left off. The state-ranked West Monona squad remains unbeaten in conference play as the playoffs loom. A team that made the State Tournament last summer, but did not win a game, that’s more than enough motivation for the Spartans.

“Take it one game at a time, every time. We think one game at a time. The future doesn’t matter, this game right here matters, and we’re going to keep playing our game. One at a time.” Miller mentioned.

Miller will play softball next season at Iowa Western.
