Looking to travel? Some prices have gone down

(WHTM) — Finally, some good news for summer travelers. Prices are down slightly, especially if you plan to fly.

Travelers heading to their flights have something to celebrate for the first time in three years: lower airfares. Bunny Sandvig says she found an amazing airfare to Seattle for “super cheap.”

A surge in travel after the pandemic led to sky-high airfares in 2023. But this year, with demand down, and he cost of jet fuel down, prices are down too. Hopper says the average summer fare is $305, down 6% from the same time last year. Flights to Europe are down almost 10%. Discount airlines like frontier are advertising some flights as low as $19.

But saving money on travel doesn’t have to end at the airport.

At this interstate rest stop, Joe Kluzner and his family were thankful gas prices have not spiked so far this year.

“Yeah not as bad as last summer,” Kluzner said.

Indeed, gas prices are down a bit too: the national average is $3.44 according to AAA, 14 cents less than same time last year. Triple A credits less demand as inflation weary Americans have been shortening their road trips.

Jennifer Chamberlain says that’s no surprise. “It’s insane, I don’t believe a lot of people are going to be able to travel, because prices are so high,” she said.

Unfortunately, hotel and Airbnb prices remain high. So while prices are still far above pre-pandemic levels, travelers are seeing some relief in 2024.

With many consumers cutting back on their travel plans that should continue to lead to lower demand and better deals. That way you don’t waste your money.
