Amazon facility in Baton Rouge opens at old Cortana Mall, will bring 1,000 new jobs
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Amazon distribution center at the former Cortana Mall in Baton Rouge has recently opened.
The Baton Rouge Area Chamber made the announcement in a Friday, June 21 social media post, calling it “a major economic win for the Capital Region.”
The new center is expected to bring over 1,000 new full-time jobs to the city. According to BRAC, new hires started their jobs recently.
“Announcements like these directly align with BRAC’s strategic plan goal of diversifying the region’s industry base, and citywide efforts to develop the Florida and Cortana corridors,” the group said.
Amazon spokesperson Divina Mims said 500 people have already been hired.
Mims said this new location is “considered our ‘first mile’ network, meaning it’s the first point for your package in the flow of materials within the supply chain before it’s passed along to our ‘middle mile’ centers then a delivery service provider to be dropped off at your doorstep.”
She said the 1.4 million square foot facility can move up to a million packages a day.
Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome released the following statement.
“The Amazon Robotics Fulfillment Center is already catalyzing prosperity for Baton Rouge through the Cortana Economic Development District and the Florida Corridor Master Plan. The fulfillment center will bring 1,000 full-time jobs, revitalizing a key area of our city. This project underscores the power of collaboration among our state and local leaders,” Broome said.
