CNN Travel editors have handpicked Flagstaff, Arizona, nestled in the expansive ponderosa pine forest along historic Route 66 and just 80 miles from the Grand Canyon National Park, as one of the top 10 destinations to explore in the United States.
This mountainous town at high elevation garnered CNN’s recognition partly due to its distinction as the first international dark-sky city. However, CNN highlighted numerous reasons beyond this. Begin with its picturesque pine forest surroundings, offering sweeping vistas of Arizona’s tallest peaks. Add to this mix cultural gems like the Museum of Northern Arizona, and natural marvels such as Wupatki and Walnut Canyon national monuments. Together, these attractions make Flagstaff an ideal destination for an enriching and extensive visit.
“A stark contrast to the desert cities of southern Arizona, Flagstaff offers cooler temperatures, fresh mountain air and a growing reputation for outdoor recreation ranging from winter skiing to summertime hiking, biking and trail running,” CNN reported.
The news organization also acknowledged Flagstaff’s thriving culinary landscape, boasting over 200 dining spots including restaurants, pubs, wine bars, and eight acclaimed craft breweries.
“The renaissance of downtown Flagstaff brought new life to its old brick buildings in the form of hip new places to eat, drink and sleep,” CNN continued.
Flagstaff also received praise for Lowell Observatory, the hilltop research center where Pluto was first discovered in 1930, and for its continuous efforts to preserve the night sky.
CNN’s videographers captured breathtaking footage of the pristine night sky from Flagstaff’s Buffalo Park, showcasing other attractions such as Meteor Crater located east of the city.
CNN editors noted their focus on smaller towns for this year’s list, prioritizing places with distinctive character.
“They’re spread across the country and serve as a reminder of what’s great about the United States: communities committed to making their towns better,” CNN wrote. “You’ll see that spirit in revitalized neighborhoods and downtowns and in residents who have put all their passion, creativity and know-how into endeavors that feed souls and bellies.”
Flagstaff beckons year-round with a diverse range of outdoor activities, serving as a gateway to the Grand Canyon and seven other national parks and monuments. From summer to fall, the city hosts numerous festivals and special events. For further details, explore DiscoverFlagstaff.com and request a complimentary visitor guide.
