The Prime Minister was pressed during a campaign visit to Derbyshire over what he had told Mr Williams, but said it would not be “right” to comment.

Told that he could not prejudice an investigation by the gambling watchdog, an independent body, he suggested that commenting would “compromise” it.

“Our enforcement team has made rapid progress so far and will continue to work closely with the Metropolitan police to draw this case to a just conclusion,” he said.

Scotland Yard also announced that seven police officers are now under investigation in relation to alleged bets on the timing of the election.

They include one of Mr Sunak’s close protection officers who is under investigation for misconduct in public office over allegedly placing a wager.
