Hiring Our Heroes event helps soldiers find future jobs

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – For soldiers preparing to leave active duty, their next steps in life may be uncertain when it comes to employment.

Here at home, community partners are coming together to help them overcome challenges.

They have dedicated their lives to protecting us.

But when their service comes to a close, the transition is not always easy.

“I’m learning how to be a civilian. I’ve been in the military now for 29 years. So, you know, just transitioning out of the military is a big deal for me,” said Sergeant Major Gary Oliver.

They say leaving behind their military community comes at a price.

Not knowing what their future holds can bring anxiety, but an annual career summit hosted by Hiring Our Heroes and the Transition Assistance Program can make all the difference.

Angela Gaston with Fort Eisenhower Transition Services said: “We’re really assisting them with preparing that resume or interview techniques, and also we’re connecting them with employment opportunities.”

Almost 80 employers showed up to the event.

Eric Eversole is the president of Hiring Our Heroes. He says there is a 40% chance a soldier will receive an offer after attending.

“Connecting them with employers that have jobs right now that want to hire them,” said Eversole.

In 2023, VFW reported that 33% of veterans say finding a civilian job is a huge issue.

Dr. Tom Clark, a retired veteran and now employer, hopes this event will benefit his fellow soldiers.

“It took me a couple of years to find my place. Now I’m in it and I’m hoping to just help others,” said Clark.
