Round Rock Sports Center expansion underway

Construction is now underway on an expansion at the Round Rock Sports Center, with the project expected to be completed by early 2026. This development will add two new courts, bringing the total number of courts at the facility to eight.

Opened in January 2014, the Round Rock Sports Center has established itself as a premier facility for sports and events. Currently, the 82,800-square-foot indoor floorplan has six basketball courts that can be converted into 12 volleyball courts.

The expansion will feature a separate entrance and is designed to provide increased flexibility for operations and event management. The new courts will enable the facility to host larger and more diverse events. For instance, the facility can be configured to accommodate a 16-court volleyball tournament or separated to hold a 6-court basketball tournament and a cheer competition simultaneously.

“Sports Tourism in Round Rock has brought more than $162 million in economic activity to the city since the opening of the Sports Center,” said Chad McKenzie, Director of Sports Management and Tourism. “This expansion project will allow Round Rock to stay competitive with other communities in hosting a wide variety of events and attracting top-tier events.”

The Sports Center has hosted numerous statewide and national events, including the USA Judo Senior National Championships, Texas State Taekwondo Championships, iSET College Table Tennis National Championships, USA Deaf Basketball National Tournament and various national cheer and dance competitions. The influx of visitors for sports events supports local businesses, hotels, and restaurants, providing a steady stream of revenue and enhancing the city’s reputation as the “Sports Capital of Texas.”

The venue also hosts youth basketball, volleyball, fitness camps, sports training and recreational activities for local residents. A full list of events and programs is available at rrsportscenter.com.

Throughout the construction period, the existing Sports Center will remain open and fully operational. While there will be short phases where individual courts and restrooms may be temporarily unavailable, these disruptions will be pre-coordinated to ensure they do not impact scheduled events or court reservations.

Additionally, some phases of construction will reduce or alter available parking spaces in the south parking lot; however, the main east lot will not be impacted.

This project is part of the City of Round Rock’s larger 2023 bond package, which was approved by voters in May 2023. The bond package, totaling $274 million, includes significant investments in parks, recreation, sports and public safety facilities. To learn more, visit roundrocktexas.gov/bond.
