Busy travel week as 70.9 million people travel for 4th of July holiday

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – More than 70 million people are traveling for the 4th of July; AAA reports it is up 5% from last year. Whether you’re hopping on a plane, train, or automobile, it’s going to be busy.

Out of that 70 million, AAA expects a record 60.6 million people will be hitting the road. The busiest day will be July 3 from 2 to 7 PM. They recommend leaving earlier, before noon if possible.

Officials want to remind drivers to watch your speed in construction zones. Many projects will pause over the weekend, but there are some roads that are still closed and could impact your travel, including parts of 172 in Brown County.

It’s closed to through traffic from 172 between highway 54 in the village of Hobart and the green bay Austin Straubel International Airport. The detour for that is via 54 and I-41.

There are several roads throughout Wisconsin that will still be closed this week. The best way to navigate as you travel is by using the 511 app. It reports all of those closures as you’re traveling and the detours for those projects.

”There may be some more increases ahead. Oil prices do continue to inch up,” said Patrick De Haan, the Head of Petroleum Analysis at Gasbuddy. “We’re also keeping an eye on develops now in the Caribbean with Hurricane Beryl, for now it doesn’t look it will have much of an impact, but it’s a reminder that tropical season is here and there could be disruption in the second half of the summer, should there be any major hurricanes.”

As for your trip home, the busiest day will be Sunday July 7 from 2 to 8 PM. If you can, AAA says you can try to beat other traffic by heading out the door before 11 AM.
