More Than Clean Sheets: North Heights Linen Service bringing jobs, boosting economy

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Today was the first day of a five-year agreement between BSA Health System and North Heights Linen Service.

North Heights Linen Service provides laundry services for healthcare facilities.

Before this partnership, BSA Health System used a company out of Albuquerque and Oklahoma City.

Not only does this partnership allow for faster and more efficient services, it also supports Amarillo’s economy.

“It’s given us the opportunity to keep BSA’s dollars for this service in Amarillo, which obviously benefits our community,” said Matt Parker, vice president, BSA Health System. “It benefits the individuals that North Heights Linen Services employees, it benefits our tax base here.”

It is more than clean sheets; North Heights Linen Service focuses on hiring those who need a second chance.

“People who are maybe not considered employable in other situations, they can work here and have a steady paycheck for their families,” said Sandy Taylor, general manager, North Heights Linen Service.

Along with employment, educational opportunities are provided through Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University.

“Having BSA as a customer helps us to also reach our goal of giving our employees an opportunity to participate in a co-op, meaning employee ownership, which will just help to bring in more wealth to this community,” said Taylor.

Taylor says the North Heights community has not seen a new employer in 50 years.

“This gives them an opportunity for more jobs. Currently, we have about 60 employees, we’d love to grow to 100,” said Taylor.

The 30,000 square foot facility has room to expand further and hopes to partner with other area hospitals.

Each year, North Heights Linen Service provides about four million pounds of health care linen.

With the new partnership with BSA Health System, they will do six million pounds. The ultimate goal is to reach 10 million pounds.
