Copper Country Sweets bakery now open for business in Laurium

LAURIUM, Mich. (WLUC) – Visitors to Laurium this summer may notice a new business sign on Hecla Street.

The Copper Country Sweets bakery is the newest baked goods business in the Keweenaw area. According to the bakery’s Owner Erin Turner there is a wide selection of choices.

“I offer a variety of sweets and pastries, typically cookies and cupcakes, muffins, tarts,” Turner said. “I do custom cakes, a lot of birthday cakes, graduation, any celebration or occasion, really.”

A graduate of Northern Michigan University, Turner has been baking since high school. During summers away, she worked at the now-closed Skinny Pete’s Bagels and Bakery, which shut down in late 2022.

After her graduation in 2023, she was approached by one of the business owners, who gave her the chance to start her own business in the building. She spent the summer at multiple farmer’s markets in the county, getting her name out as the building was prepared. In April, however, as the business opening neared, an unfortunate incident delayed it.

“I had just started moving my equipment into this building…I got a text from my landlord saying that there was a big brick thrown through the window, and then I was in contact with the police department,” Turner continued. “They were investigating it, but we never heard anything more.”

The incident resulted in both support for and discovery of the business from the community, Turner notes, a silver lining. The business held a grand opening on June 8. Turner says many customers are happy to see a new business in Laurium.

“It’s been a lot of positive feedback; people are really excited,” added Turner. “I’ve had people come in to order their birthday cakes. They’re like, they’ve only had grocery store birthday cakes recently (laughs).”

Copper Country Sweets is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. She will also be selling baked goods at the From the Ground Farmers Market Collective at Agassiz Park in Calumet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a full schedule, check out the business’s Facebook page by clicking here.
