AAA reports record travel in the Midwest for Independence Day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – According to AAA, travel numbers have spiked to 5 million in the Midwest. They said it’s higher than rates they’ve seen even before the pandemic.

AAA’s forecast covers travel from June 29 to Saturday, July 7. Reports show July 3-4 as the biggest days for travel both on the road and by plane.

Whether people travel by air or land, Brian Ortner with AAA recommends starting early because airports will be packed and you could run into traffic on the roads.

“Build in that time so you don’t get frustrated,” Ortner said. “It’s a lot easier to sit in the airport and wait for your flight than to be outside in line trying to check your bag, running late.”

He said the busiest time for travel is between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. If you get out before or after those times, Ortner said travel is more likely to be smooth sailing.

AAA said when it comes to air travel it’s all about giving yourself more than enough time to get to your flight. That means factoring TSA wait lines and check-ins.

Experts advise drivers to start travel prep by checking their car’s maintenance. That includes tire pressure and fuel levels.

AAA predicts they will help nearly 800,000 stranded drivers around the country.

“We’re seeing record numbers in our region, just as we’re seeing nationally,” said Ortner. “On a national level, nearly 70 million folks are getting ready to travel, and over here in our region, over 5 million will be traveling 55 miles or more this holiday weekend.”

AAA will be offering its free Tow-To-Go Program beginning Wednesday. Ornter said this should be used as a backup option for impaired people who cannot drive. He reminds folks to celebrate responsibly by choosing a designated driver.

The top destinations in the country this holiday are Seattle, Orlando, and Anchorage. Most folks are going internationally to Vancouver, London, and Rome.
