Man wanted for child sex crimes arrested after barricading in RV at Rowan Co. travel center

SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) – A Rowan County man wanted for multiple sex offenses was taken into custody after barricading himself inside of an RV at the Pilot Travel Center on Peeler Road.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the travel center to help US Marshals Service serve warrants on Steven Joseph Borek, according to the press release.

Deputies said he was wanted by Statesville Police on six counts of first-degree statutory sex offense and six counts of indecent liberties.

Marshals said they had information that he was in an RV at the travel center. Once they arrived, they said he barricaded himself inside.

According to deputies, negotiators tried multiple times to get him to come out and could see he had a knife.

Deputies with the Rowan County Special Response Team eventually made entry into the RV and said they found him on the floor with a self-inflicted knife wound to his neck.

Borek was taken to an area hospital for treatment and, according to deputies, was not hurt as a result of the forced entry. No officers were injured.
