Entertainment briefs | Folklife Festival takes place in Blue Lake this month
Vatcher Brothers
The Vatcher Brothers — an award-winning Northern California indie-alternative duo — will perform July 12 from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. at Phatsy Kline’s Parlor Lounge, Second and C streets, Eureka.
This group blends “crunchy rock and thumpy electronic pop” in a hauntingly familiar yet refreshingly new way. There is no charge to attend the show.
Folklife Festival
The Humboldt Folklife Society will present the Humboldt Folklife Festival from July 14 to 20 in Blue Lake.
The event, which began in 1978, serves to highlight the many talented local musicians that live and perform in Humboldt County, and to encourage people to participate in music and dance.
July 14 marks the return of the Humboldt Folklife Society’s partnership with the Blue Lake Chamber of Commerce for Annie and Mary Day at Perigot Park. Music begins at noon following the Annie and Mary Day parade, and features four bands plus food, drink and crafts vendors. This event is family friendly and free.
The evening performances commence on July 16 inside Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theater with the Songwriter Night at 7 p.m., featuring John Luddington, Sari Baker, Melanie Barnett and Xeff Scolari performing their original songs and discussing their songwriting process.
The festival then moves outside to the Amphitheatre Stage at Dell’Arte featuring Kray Van Kirk, Rise and Bloom, and Huckleberry Flint on July 17, followed by Ruby Ruth and Mule Ranch, Elderberry Rust and a special performance by Cadillac Ranch with its new horn section on July 18. The outdoor shows start at 6 p.m.; chairs and blankets are highly recommended. Tickets for all weeknight shows are available at www.humboldtfolklife.com.
Friday night’s “Barn Dance” features Lyndsey Battle and Cidermill at Prasch Hall in Blue Lake, starting at 7 p.m. No experience is needed.
The grand finale is the “All Day Free Festival,” featuring 16 bands plus percussion workshops led by Jesse Jonathan, and the traditional “Beatles Singalong” at Dell’Arte beginning at 10:45 a.m. until 8 p.m. Food trucks and beverages will be available.
