Man accused of fatal Fresno shooting arrested in raid on illegal gambling, police say
A wanted man accused of a deadly shooting in Fresno was taken into custody, police said Friday.
Robert Phompong, 41, was arrested Wednesday on Olive near Millbrook avenues while police were serving a warrant related to an investigation of illegal drugs and gambling, police said in a news release.
He fled briefly on foot but was apprehended. Police accused Phompong of the killing of Yong Vang, a 42-year-old man shot to death just outside a truck about 4 p.m. April 8 near Ninth Street and McKinley Avenue.
Police said four days after the killing they had acquired a warrant for Phompong’s arrest.
Vang was shot once during a confrontation, police previously said. Gunfire notification system ShotSpotter notified police of the shooting, and witnesses later told officers that a fistfight preceded the gunfire.
Vang was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.
