Girl Group Boys World Breaks Up After Five Years, Citing ‘Things Out of Our Control’
Boys World, the five-piece pop girl group that blew up on TikTok in 2020, is breaking up. On Friday, the group shared an emotional video and a letter to their fans, announcing that they were disbanding, citing changes in the industry and “things that are out of our control.”
“After five unforgettable years of music, friendship and memories, we are sadly announcing the disbandment of Boys World,” read the letter. “Each member of Boys World has grown not just as artists but as sisters, learning from each other and becoming stronger together. We are eternally grateful for these years together.”
The group — comprising Olivia Ruby, Queenie Mae, Lilian Kay, Makhyli, and Elana Caceres — pointed to “moments of change and transition” in the music industry as the reason for their disbanding.
In a video, the five members shared the news in between tears. “We went through so much in this group. I can’t even imagine everything we went through without these girls,” said Queenie in the clip. Change is very scary and uncomfortable… This has been our whole world for the last five years.”
“We have accepted that there are some things that are out of our control,” the group wrote. “Change can be scary and uncomfortable, but it can be incredibly exciting. It can open doors to opportunities and creative possibilities we’ve never imagined.”
The group ended their note by thanking their fans for being “the heart of Boys World” and asked that their fans continue to support each of its members as they “embark on new adventures.”
“Though this may be goodbye for now, our music will always live on and so will our friendship,” the note read. “Girlfriends forever.”
After forming in 2019, Boys World officially launched in 2020 with the single “Girlfriends,” after being formed by KYN Entertainment founder Sonny Takhar, who previously served as the president of Simon Cowell‘s Syco Music. The group built a devoted following of 2 million on TikTok as the group showcased each member’s individuality.
The group debuted its first EP, While You Were Out, in 2021, featuring standouts “Relapse” and “Touched by an Angel.” They followed that project with EP Me, My Girls & I in 2023. They released the single “Caught in Your Love” earlier this year.
Boys World debuted the video for “So What” with Rolling Stone in Summer 2022. “As individuals, we are all different — pop, R&B, hip-hop, indie, rock, punk, all the genres that you want,” Queenie said at the time. “But when it comes together, it makes Boys World. Like for some reason, whenever we listen to music, we just like what we like together.”
“We want to make people feel good with our music. We’re making music to help people have fun,” added Lillian.
