AAA expects busy weekend on the road following 4th of July travels
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – AAA expects high traffic the weekend after the 4th of July as families travel home from vacation.
Morgan Dean, AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson, said Sunday, July 7 is expected to be a busy day on the roads and at the airport. If you are going to be driving, leave your home early in the morning before 11am.
”That 2 to 7pm afternoon time period can be very busy on the roadways out there,” Dean said. “For those that are traveling through airports, get to the airport well ahead of time, as there is likely to be a long line at those TSA security checkpoints.”
When there are more cars on the road, there is a higher chance of an accident. Dean advised drivers to avoid all distractions, including cell phones.
“It is illegal to have your cell phone in hand while driving; you can use it when it’s in a holder to use GPS,” Dean said. “Hand it off to a copilot so it is not distracting.”
Phones are not the only thing that can be a distraction on the road.
“Also, recognize that things inside the vehicle can be distracting, too. Passengers can be distracting; pets in the vehicle, eating, drinking and onboard electronics can take our focus from the roadway,” Dean said.
Dean recommended inspecting your vehicle before getting on the roadway, to avoid possible car issues on your trip. He added, do not drive under the influence of alcohol or cannabis.
