Heading back home after Independence Day weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The final 4th of July weekend travel day is today, and people, who haven’t already, are headed home after celebrating.

WTOC stopped by the airport in Savannah to check on travel conditions and what people traveling through did to beat the travel stress.

Triple A projected almost 71 million people would travel at least 50 miles over the 4th of July holiday period. Now that the 4th has officially passed, people are making their way back home.

Paul and Sherri Reddick say they’ve seen the airport many times when it’s at its busiest, and they expected their travel day Saturday to be no different.

“Well, we thought it was going to be crazy, and so far, it hasn’t been. So, I feel really fortunate about that,” said the pair.

One mother, who was waiting for her daughter to return home, says the time of day you plan to travel has a big impact.

“In the afternoon time, it’s real, it’s real busy,” said Tracy Stef.

Despite your departure time, traveling can still be hard to predict.

WTOC asked one couple in the airport if they had any advice for others headed out Sunday.

Here’s what they had to say:

“I travel a good bit, so I always want to get to the airport a little early. Rental car situations are different at every airport, so this one is very nice and convenient,” said Donna and Jim Semans.

When we spoke with the Savannah/Hilton Head International team earlier this week, they recommended getting to the airport at least two hours before your flight, that way you’ll have plenty of time to get parked, check your bags and get through security.

TSA expects to screen 3 million people today alone at airports across the country, so keep that in mind if you still have some traveling left to do.
