SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA opens expanded fitness center

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – YMCA members now have the chance to spread out, move around and get in shape at the new fitness center expansion at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA, 200 Y Boulevard in Rockford.

The $3 million, 9,000 square foot project includes the cost of 50 new pieces of cardio equipment, turf that acts as training space, more plate-loaded items and squat racks with bumper plates and platforms.

There is also an EGYM, a machine that members can use to get a customized work out based on their goals and abilities. The Y says it is the first fitness center in the region to introduce the training option. Leaders with the YMCA say expanding the fitness center will help with overcrowding as membership increases.

“Our whole goal here is that we’ve created a welcoming space for our new and existing members to help them on their wellness journey,” said Rachel Robinson, executive director of the facility.

The YMCA is still fundraising for more improvements.

“This exciting fitness expansion is one of the many meaningful projects that will begin to take shape as funds are available to complete them,” says Michelle Gorham, chief advancement officer for YMCA of Rock River Valley. “Including additional work at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA and a significant renovation at Good Shepherd YMCA, our new location expected to open this fall on North Rockton Avenue.”

The SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit the YMCA of Rock River Valley’s website.
