Over 8K young Detroiters are employed this summer thanks to city’s summer job program

DETROIT – More than 8,600 summer job opportunities are now open for Detroit youth through Grow Detroit’s Young Talent program.

City leaders partner with corporations, non-profits, and local businesses to connect youth, ages 14-24, with jobs over six weeks.

The program offers diverse opportunities, from the Detroit Junior Police and Fire Cadets to healthcare, skilled trade, financial services, IT and more, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for the youth.

Now in its 10th year, the program has been a beacon of success, helping nearly 80,000 young people gain employment and learn on-the-job skills over the past decade.

Detroit Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison says young people learn soft skills too, like “Getting ready for work, being prepared, they’re learning what it actually means to be an employee, and by getting those skillsets through a summer program, it’s getting them ready for college, for trade school and to be a productive member of society.”
