World War II grave marker returned to owner nearly two years later

WAVERLY, Iowa (KCRG) – A grave marker honoring a World War II veteran has been returned to its proper place, after being missing for nearly two years.

Waverly Police say that in August 2022, officials located a World War II grave marker but were unable to locate the owner, eventually turned it over to the Bremer Co. Veteran’s Affairs Office for storage and safekeeping.

Then, on July 3rd 2024, Victoria Wickham reached out to Waverly police after noticing her father Clarence’s grave marker was missing. Clarence Wickham served in the U.S. Army from 1941 – 1945. He later served with the Waverly Police Department, including as Chief of Police from 1962 to 1977).

On July 7, 2024, Officer Johnson and Sergeant Ron Bigger were able to place the World War II marker at Wickham’s grave. Bigger worked with Wickham for over 10 years at the Waverly Police Department.
