GOLF
Ludvig Aberg overcame a pair of bogeys early on the back nine with three late birdies that carried him to a 5-under 65 Saturday at the Scottish Open, slightly dampening the enthusiasm of a gallery fully behind local star Robert MacIntyre.
Aberg was at 17-under 193 as he goes for his first victory of the year, and third in a career that began only 13 months ago after leaving Texas Tech as the top player in college golf.
MacIntyre surged to a two-shot lead at one point but closed with a bogey to drop two shots behind Aberg after a 63.
Adam Scott (64) was three shots behind in pursuit of his first victory in more than four years.
LPGA: Stephanie Kyriacou of Australia posted seven birdies in a 4-under 67 and will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Evian Championship in France.
Kyriacou was at 14 under overall. Ayaka Furue of Japan (70) and Lauren Coughlin of the United States (65) were tied for second.
LIV: Anirban Lahiri of India shot a 5-under 66 to take a four-shot lead at the LIV Golf Andalucia tournament in Sotogrande, Spain.
Lahiri was at 7 under after two rounds. Danny Lee of New Zealand was his nearest chaser at 3 under.
AUTO RACING
NASCAR: Ty Gibbs will lead the field to green for Sunday’s Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway, the site of his first career start in 2022.
Gibbs, 21, turned a lap of 170.039 mph in the No. 54 Toyota to earn the pole for the 400-mile race. The grandson of NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Joe Gibbs has yet to win in 71 career Cup races.
His Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin, will start third and fourth. Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron turned a lap of 169.661 mph and starts second.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia surged ahead on the last climb to win the mountainous 14th stage and extend his overall lead to nearly two minute.
Pogacar caught up with and overtook his UAE Emirates teammate, Adam Yates, to win the 99-mile stage in the Pyrenees.
Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark crossed the line 39 seconds behind Pogacar but moved into second place overall, ahead of Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel.
Pogacar’s lead over Vingegaard is 1 minute, 57 seconds.
HOCKEY
NHL: The New York Rangers and up-and-coming defenseman Braden Schneider have agreed on a two-year, $4.4 million contract extension.
Schneider had career highs last season in games played (82), assists (14) and points (19) and tied his career high with five goals. He ranked second among Rangers defensemen in hits (167) and blocked shots (133).
