SC offenders get job search boost with new laptop program
(WPDE) — Some offenders seeking employment will have increased access to jobs thanks to an initiative by the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services (SCDPPPS).
The department distributed 21 laptops to probation and parole county offices.
The laptops do not require a network connection and have programs installed that can help offenders create résumés, cover letters, PowerPoint presentations and more.
Offenders can also use the laptops to participate virtually in the programs required for their supervision, such as Batterer’s Intervention, Substance Use Education and Sex Offender Treatment.
NEW: Confidential settlement approved in wrongful death lawsuit against Horry Co. bar
Depending on usage, these laptops will be moved to other county offices on a rotating schedule to improve access across the state.
Use of the laptops will be monitored, and the laptops will not be loaned to offenders on an individual basis.
SCDPPPS has an active offender population of 22,610. Currently, approximately 26% of those offenders are unemployed.
