UWEC hosts World Flute Society Convention

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – One convention is bringing sounds from all around the world right here to Eau Claire.

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is hosting the World Flute Society Convention, which celebrates the musical and cultural expressions of the world’s Indigenous and folk flute traditions.

From India, Japan, Australia, Latin America and Native American roots, a variety of musicians and their unique wind instruments are on display.

“Ancient American flutes from the southwest which date back about 600 current era. We have modern Native American-style flutes. Ash has a didgeridoo and he’s selling some flutes here he’s got. I see he’s got a bansuri over there from India. There’s pretty much all kinds of flutes here represented,” shared Peter Phippen, a musician at the convention.

Tonight was the opening night of the convention and it goes through Sunday. Dozens of performers will be playing at the Haas Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m.
