Sports briefs: Mill Valley resident claims national clay court title

Mill Valley resident Gus Grumet won the under-16 National Clay Court Tennis Championships held in Delray Beach, Fla. this past week.

Grumet, who is a rising junior at University High in San Francisco, won all seven of his matches at the tournament, which wrapped up on Monday.

Grumet, who won the North Coast Section Division II singles championship as a freshman for University in 2023, has compiled a 54-11 record since last July and is one of the top-ranked U-16 players in the country.

Little League

After starting the postseason with 11 consecutive wins, the Twin Cities 9-10s All Stars lost back-to-back games against Petaluma National in the Section 1 championship.

Twin Cities sustained an excruciating 15-14 loss in the first game on Tuesday but still had a chance to clinch the title and advance to NorCals with a win on Wednesday at Lucchesi Field in Petaluma.

Petaluma National scored three runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Twin Cities (11-2) scored once in the fifth inning but could get no closer.

Conor Gray had two of the eight hits on the night for Twin Cities. Doug Formby, Leo Ellenzweig, and Cooper Peterson each drove in a run.

Baseball

The San Rafael Pacifics were held to four hits across nine innings is a 2-0 home loss against the Marysville Drakes on Tuesday night.

Marysville pitcher Earl Johnson tossed a complete game, striking out 10 hitters. San Rafael starter Jayson Summers countered with eight strong innings, allowing five hits and two unearned runs while striking out nine.

The Pacifics (28-16) were set to hit the road for another game against Marysville (25-19) on Wednesday night before coming home for a two-game series against Bakersfield on Thursday and Friday.

Golf

Peacock Gap Golf Club will host the third annual San Rafael City Championship on July 20-21. The 36-hole stroke play event will two scratch flights, (Men’s and Seniors Championship), and three net flights (Men, Women, and seniors).

Pickleball
