Samsung’s next-gen foldables could be as thin as regular smartphones

While the Galaxy Z Fold 6 isn’t as thin as most of its Chinese rivals, Samsung is reportedly striving to make its future Galaxy Z Fold series phones as thin as its Galaxy S series slab-style phones. If the new report is true, the South Korean firm listens to customers but may need more time.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be thinner than 10mm

A new report from KED Global claims that the head of Samsung’s mobile division has asked the company’s engineers to make Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold phones thinner. In fact, he wants them to develop an extra slim foldable smartphone that is as slim as Galaxy S series phones.

The most recent Galaxy S series phone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, is 8.4mm thin, while the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+ are 7.6mm and 7.7mm thin. So, if Samsung succeeds, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be almost as thin as 8.4mm.

The report also claims that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim (or Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra) by the end of this year. It will be as thin as 10mm and have an 8-inch screen. If the information is accurate, Samsung’s next book-style foldable phone will match its rivals from Chinese brands. Future models in the lineup will reportedly be even thinner.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6, announced last week in Paris, is 12.1mm thin. Watch its design in our video below.

The first foldable launched by Samsung, the Galaxy Fold, was 17.1mm thick. Since then, Samsung has been trying to make foldable phones thinner, lighter, and more durable. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the world’s first IPX8-rated foldable phone. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 are the world’s first IP48-rated foldable phones.

It would be a great improvement if Samsung could bring full dust and water-resistant ratings to its future foldable phones. Another concern among foldable phones is the durability of their foldable screen, which could develop cracks across the hinge.
