What Is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is a summer sale that was first introduced in 2015. At the time, it was a one-day event meant to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. Since then, the sale has transformed into a two-day, annual affair in which Amazon offers major discounts on thousands of products. Since 2022, the e-tailer has also hosted an October Prime Day, though that’s not its official name.
When Is Amazon Prime Day 2024?
Prime Day 2024 started July 16 and rans until 3:00 a.m. EDT on July 18. This was a week later than anticipated—the event usually happens during the second week of July, though the retailer has deviated before. Shoppers had about 48 hours to shop the official sale, but some items remain discounted after the official event ended.
How Many Times A Year Does Prime Day Take Place?
Technically, there’s only one Prime Day each year. But for the past two years, Amazon has run a similar savings event in October. This year, Amazon also hosted its first-ever Big Spring Sale Event, adding to its annual sale repertoire yet again. Time will tell whether it becomes a tradition as well.
Is Everything Discounted For Prime Day?
No, Amazon Prime Day isn’t a sitewide sale. Still, when Prime Day was running, you could find hundreds of thousands of discounts across nearly all product categories from brands like Sony, Allbirds, Kiehl’s and, of course, Amazon itself. Just keep in mind that you have to be a Prime member to take advantage of the deals.
What Other Retailers Have Prime Day Sales?
Many retailers offer their own Prime Day-adjacent sales. Nordstrom ran its annual Anniversary Sale to coincide with Prime Day and Walmart offered thousands of deals as well. Similarly, Target hosted a two-day sale event and Best Buy ran a Black Friday in July promotion.
In recent years, individual brands and smaller businesses have also started participating in Prime Day. Whenever Prime Day is running, we suggest keeping an eye on your favorite retailers’ sites to make sure you’re getting the best deals possible.
Is Prime Day Better Than Black Friday?
The answer largely depends on what you’re shopping for. If you’re in the market for Amazon devices, tech and small appliances, you can typically find some great deals during Prime Day. However, Black Friday offers the opportunity to save at nearly every retailer you can think of. It’s also generally a better time to save on clothing, major appliances and furniture.
Our Tips For Shopping Amazon Prime Day 2024
Make A Wish List Before You Start Browsing
With thousands of enticing deals available, it can be easy to end up making some unnecessary impulse buys over Prime Day. If you’re looking to curb your spending, be sure to make a wish list of items you know you need before you start scrolling through the offers. That way, you can navigate straight to the items you’re looking for (and be less likely to forget anything, too).
Do Some Price History Research
Sometimes Amazon will inflate the original price of an item to make a deal look better than it really is. To avoid falling for that, try Googling the item’s Black Friday or Prime Day 2023 price to get an idea of what it’s sold for in the past. You can also use a price history tracking site like CamelCamelCamel to get an idea of what the product typically goes for.
Shop On Both Days
Amazon typically releases new deals on the second day of the sale. Make sure to check out those offers, otherwise you could be missing out on some good deals. That said, prices don’t typically drop any lower on existing deals so if one catches your eye today you can go ahead and add it to your cart.
