Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas collapse in spectacular fashion at The Open
Scottie Scheffler would’ve been licking his chops seeing the weather forecast ahead of the final day of The Open.
After the elements battered Royal Troon on Saturday, it was predicted that the wind would die down significantly.
That meant birdies on the front nine and then hold on for dear life.
Scheffler and his Ryder Cup teammate Thomas were within striking distance.
At 13.34pm, the aforementioned Thomas strode to the first tee box with expectation and hope.
He knew that if he could post a round in the 60s that he could potentially lift the claret jug a few hours later.
At 13.36pm, Thomas reached into his Tour bag for another golf ball having hit one of the wildest tee shots all year.
This thing was carved so far right it was nearly on the beach.
Shot tracking didn’t even pick it up and he made a devasting triple bogey straight out of the gate.
Challenge already over.
Watch that here:
Scheffler’s fortunes were slightly different.
Back-to-back birdies at the 7th and 8th holes saw the world number one edge closer to the leaders.
But his hopes of adding a third major title to his resume went up in smoke at the 9th hole where he made a double bogey out of nowhere.
He found the fairway with his tee shot and came up slightly short of the green with his approach.
From 15 yards, Scheffler took a further four shots to get home.
That included a three-putt from 6ft 4ins.
Crikey.
Watch that here:
Truly wild stuff from the reigning Masters Champion.
And his expression said it all.
Looks like he’ll have to wait eight months to have another crack at a major championship where he’ll attempt to defend the green jacket.
