MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 23

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV

A two-run home run from Bryce Harper in the top of the first cooked this same NRFI for us yesterday, but I’m doubling down on the pitching staff of the Twins. Yes, I do know that the Phillies are a strong hitting team, but I feel Simeon Woods Richardson can handle what Bailey Ober couldn’t. The main reason is his ability to limit home runs. In the last month he has only allowed two homers and both of them came against the Tigers. In his other four starts, he kept the opposing team from hitting one out. Additionally, he held each of those last four opponents to three runs or fewer, so he’s been on enough of a roll to trust for three outs here.

On the other side, the Phillies send out Cy Young frontrunner Zack Wheeler to finish off the NRFI. He’s held each of his last four opponents to two runs or fewer and has averaged just under seven strikeouts per game in that span. Plus, he too has been keeping the ball in the park. In those last four games, he’s allowed just one homer. That one was a fifth inning homer to Cavan Biggio in a 10-1 victory over the Dodgers. He should have the stuff needed to take this one home for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 23: No (-110)

Chicago White Sox vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV

There doesn’t need to be much justification on the front end of this because we’re talking about the White Sox and their hitting. They rank 29th in MLB in first inning runs, and manage to be worse across the whole game – where they rank dead last. They’re scoring just 3.13 runs per game at this point, so I’d like a pitching machine to help pick up the NRFI. Jon Gray hasn’t been stellar, but he’s been better than the aforementioned pitching machine. His sub-4.00 ERA should be enough to do the trick here.

In the bottom half, we need little justification as well. Texas is quite a bit better at the plate, where they rank 17th in runs scored. They are going to have a stiff test in front of them, though, in Garrett Crochet. The All-Star lefty has been one of the bright spots for the White Sox this season. He has allowed just four runs over his last four outings (more if you cound his scoreless appearance in the All-Star Game). He also hasn’t allowed a dinger since June 13th. That means he should be able to stifle whatever Texas sends his way.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 23: No (-135)
