Disappointment at Jersey gambling addiction centre delay

Jersey’s gambling regulation chief has said he is disappointed a specialist gambling addiction treatment centre has not been delivered.

Cyril Whelan, chairman of Jersey Gambling Commission, said plans for a centre had come up against obstacles “with dull regularity”.

Last year, the commission was close to signing a contract with an overseas treatment specialist who ended the partnership in order to focus on other work.

Mr Whelan said this was a “cruel blow” but he was determined to work with the Government of Jersey to provide a service.

“Our resolve remains undaunted, and while this would have provided a solid solution, work with government continues,” he said in the commission’s annual report.

“I have said for many years that such a service should be provided by government as addictions across the piece are public health issues and I am pleased to say that, notwithstanding changes in administration, the commitment of government and the adult mental health service in particular remains solid.

“To that end, the priority of the commission must now be to work with and support colleagues in government to establish such a service.”
