Rob Lowe Says a ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ Sequel Is in the ‘Very Early Stages’

It’s been almost 40 years since Rob Lowe’s coming-of-age dramedy St. Elmo’s Fire first hit screens, and the actor says a potential sequel is actually in the early stages of development.

Rob sat down alongside his son and Unstable co-star John Owen Lowe, 29, while promoting the second season of their Netflix comedy series, and the handsome 60-year-old leading man spoke with ET’s Ash Crossan about the long-rumored reboot.

Following the buzz of the recent documentary Brats — which told the story of the so-called Brat Pack, a group of young actors, including Lowe, who dominated pop culture in the ’80s — there has been a renewed call for a follow-up to Lowe’s cult classic 1985 film.

“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Rob revealed, adding that the release of the Brats documentary has “only added to the excitement around it.”

“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” Rob added. “So we will see.”

Rob starred alongside Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy in the film, which follows seven friends fresh out of college as they try to navigate through their post-collegiate lives.

Meanwhile, John Owen — who refers to the film as “St. Elmers” — admitted he’s not seen the movie.

They have, however, been working alongside one another in their Netflix comedy series Unstable, where they play a fictional father-son duo. John Owen stars as Jackson, the shy and soft-spoken son of eccentric and semi-egotistical tech mogul Ellis — played by Rob.

“This whole show is based on his incessant trolling of me on his Instagram,” Rob joked. “So the very nature of this relationship, and being able to put it out there on a TV show, is so special.”

Unstable season 2 premieres Aug. 1 on Netflix.
