Bill Maher thinks ‘tacky’ Taylor Swift is ‘gonna get dumped’ by Travis Kelce
Bill Maher doesn’t think Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will go the distance.
The comedian and TV host, 68, predicted that the couple are going to break up while chatting with Haliey Welch, better known as “Hawk Tuah Girl,” on Monday’s episode of his “Club Random” podcast.
“I’m sure she’s a lovely person, but the whole thing with the football player,” Maher said about Swift, 34, who has been dating Kelce, 34, for almost a year.
“I just felt like 35 was a little old to be like, ‘My boyfriend’s a football player and I wear his jersey to the game with his number on it!’ Right? I mean, come on,” he added.
Maher was referring to Swift showing up to the Kansas City Chiefs games to support her boyfriend during the latest NFL season. She went to 13 games, including the Super Bowl in February, which the Chiefs won.
Welch, 21, defended Swift and said that “Style” singer should do “whatever makes her happy.”
“He’s gonna dump her, though. You know that,” Maher bluntly replied.
“With her, it’s like the Gatorade at the Super Bowl, you know you’re gonna get dumped,” he added. “You just don’t know when.”
Welch noted that if Swift and Kelce do indeed break up, the Grammy Award winner will likely come out with another banger album about their relationship.
“It won’t be ‘f – – k John Mayer’ no more, it will be ‘f – – k Travis,” Welch added, referring to Swift’s relationship with ex John Mayer which inspired her iconic 2010 breakup song “Dear John.”
“That was a long time ago,” said Maher, before asking, “Is she still singing about that?”
After Welch explained that Swift has been performing her “old music” on her Eras Tour, Maher said it’s “very tacky” of the “All Too Well” hitmaker to write and sing about her personal life.
“You can’t control what the muse dictates to you. She’s a songwriter. I can’t fault her for that,”
he said.
Maher added: “But It does seem like such a recurrent theme. At some point, you just wanna say, maybe you should write a song called ‘Maybe It’s Me.’”
Despite his criticism, Maher also said he’s an “admirer” of Swift and compared her success to that of The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, who “had immense careers” and “dominated the music into the culture.”
Swift and Kelce’s relationship has been in the headlines ever since they were first linked in September 2023.
The “Fearless” singer supported her boyfriend during the NFL season. Kelce has attended a number of Swift’s shows on her record-breaking tour.
Swift talked about the romance for the very first time in her Time 2023 Person of the Year interview, explaining that the lovebirds “don’t care” about keeping their relationship private like the singer did with her ex Joe Alwyn.
“The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other,” she said.
Kelce, for his part, told WSJ Magazine at the end of last year that he’s not afraid of the public attention that comes with dating Swift.
“Obviously I’ve never dated anyone with that kind of aura about them … I’ve never dealt with it,” the Chiefs tight end said. “But at the same time, I’m not running away from any of it.”
“The scrutiny she gets, how much she has a magnifying glass on her, every single day, paparazzi outside her house, outside every restaurant she goes to, after every flight she gets off, and she’s just living, enjoying life. When she acts like that I better not be the one acting all strange,” he added.
Kelce was asked about possibly proposing to Swift at the Super Bowl earlier this year, but he clarified that he was focused on the big game.
In May, an insider told US Weekly that Kelce “has no plans” to propose to his girlfriend anytime soon.
“It’s not even on his radar,” the source said. “Marriage is something he takes very seriously and not something he would ever just jump into without giving it some careful consideration.”
