MILITARY MATTERS: Heroes hiring event in Augusta helps former soldiers find jobs

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WTVM) – For soldiers preparing to leave active duty, their next steps in life may be uncertain when it comes to employment. Community partners in one part of Georgia are coming together to help them overcome challenges.

For former service members, who have dedicated their lives to protecting us for years or decades, the military is all they know. But when their service comes to a close, the transition is not always easy.

“I’m learning how to be a civilian. I’ve been in the military now for 29 years. so, you know just transitioning out of the military is a big deal for me,” military veteran Gary Oliver said.

And leaving behind their military community can come at a price, with plenty of questions.

“What do I do after I’ve served for so many years,” Oliver asked.

Not knowing what their future holds can bring anxiety, but it helps to have events like the annual career summit in Augusta, Georgia, hosted by Hiring our Heroes and the Transition Assistance Program.

Angela Gaston, who is helping veterans find jobs, said, “We’re really assisting them with preparing that resume, or interview techniques, and also we’re connecting them with employment opportunities.”

Almost 80 employers showed up to the event near Fort Eisenhower. Eric Eversole, the president of Hiring Our Heroes, says there is a 40% chance a soldier will receive an offer after attending.

“We are connecting them with employers that have jobs right now. that want to hire them,” Eversole said.

Dr. Tom Clark, a veteran and now employer, hopes this event will benefit his fellow soldiers.

“It took me a couple years to find my place. now I’m in it and I’m hoping to just help others,” Dr. Clark said.

In 2023, the VFW reported 33% of veterans say finding a civilian job is a huge issue.
