Keeping track of the extensive entertainment options in the Wilmington area

As some of you may have seen, earlier this week I published a story about Wilmington-area venues. The idea was have a fun list of local places where people go to be entertained, from big (Live Oak Bank Pavilion, capacity 7,200) to small (Live at Ted’s, capacity 62).

Things took a bit of turn, though, when some people felt left out. And while the list was never really meant to be all-inclusive — and couldn’t have been without being three or four times as long (churches, breweries, movie theaters, restaurants and art galleries were already not included) — I get it.

I wound up adding a couple of places and could probably add a few more, but the point is that there are a LOT of places dedicated to entertainment in the Wilmington area. I’ll continue to try to keep track of all of them!

Now let’s get into this weekend.

Weekend weather outlook

It’s going to be a hot, muggy and potentially rainy weekend in the Wilmington area. Highs near 90 each day, with a 40% chance of scattered thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, increasing to about a 60% chance on Sunday.

The Vivace classical music festival returns to Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center this weekend, but we’ve also got the day-long Port City Rock Jam musical festival, a couple of new theatrical productions, a big art show at Landfall, a whole bunch of concerts and more. Peep what’s going on in Wilmington this weekend right here.

Plus, we’ve got a list of area food and drink events for August, and a new restaurant with a cozy, laid-back vibe opens in Wilmington’s Brooklyn Arts District.

Getting to know JJ Niemann

It’s been quite the ascent for Wilmington native JJ Niemann, a graduate of Coastal Christian High School, from doing small parts at Thalian Hall to starring in “Back to the Future: The Musical” on Broadway. We’ve got his story.

News you can use

As you may have heard, a tropical weather system could be heading toward the Wilmington area next week. We’re tracking the storm.

Plus, we pay tribute to the New Hanover County Library’s downtown branch before it relocates next year, and we take a look at area venues from largest to smallest.
